In 2014 the City of York Council contacted me asking if I could help visualise an open innovation process they were running with their citizens. I took what they had started out as a complex diagram and made it into a visual interpretation of the innovation journey, using a metaphor of a landscape to show different stages and actions. The crucial element in the process visual was to ensure that it could be translated into other European languages as part of an URBACT funded transfer project between York, San Sebastian, Siracusa and Tallinn.
Towards the end of the project the process visual underwent some minor changes and I also supported the conclusion of the project with graphic recording of conclusion workshops and events. I helped visualise the individual stories of how the transfer process worked for each of the cities and also drew out the “key ingredients for a 21st century city”. The visuals have been successfully used both to explain the process to everyday people and to provide visual summaries in reports and on websites.
The work done by Laura was excellent and brought our innovation model to life. It was invaluable in helping others to understanding the process clearly, and in a lively way that inspired and enagaged people. The process for creating it was straightforward and Laura was very effective in clarifying the brief and making helpful suggestions to improve the final product.
